DE-2760272 Federal German State of Hesse (Hessen)

The flag of Hesse (Hessen) is simple - two horizontal bars of red and white.  So in order to make an attractive postcard, the names of all things significant to Hesse are put on the postcard.  Important cities like Wiesbaden (the capital); Frankfurt am Main are there.  So are mountain ranges like Rhön and Taunus. I believe that “Ei Gude wie!” a wildly popular song originated from Hesse and of course it is printed on this clever card as well.

The crest of Hesse is also on the postcard

Germany is made up of sixteen Länder and Hesse (Hessen in German) is one of them.   Actually there are two concepts of Hesse.  It is both a cultural region of Germany and the name of an individual German state.
The cultural region of Hesse includes both the State of Hesse and the area known as Rhenish Hesse (Rheinhessen) in the neighbouring Rhineland-Palatinate state. The oldest city of the cultural region of Hesse, Mainz, is in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The State of Hesse (German: Land Hessen, literally "Country of Hesse") is part of the larger cultural region. It has an area of 21,110 km2 (8,150 sq mi) and just over six million inhabitants. The capital is Wiesbaden. Hesse's largest city is Frankfurt am Main.

This postcard came from Stefan (9 Jan 2014) Postcrossing.
