FI-2061925 FI-2471207 A glorious row of siniristilippuja (“Blue Cross Flags”)

The flag of Finland is popularly called Siniristilippu which means “Blue Cross Flag”.  The flag of Finland is based on the Scandinavian cross. It was adopted after independence from Russia when many patriotic Finns wanted a special flag for their country but the design of the flag dates dates back to the 19th century.

Significance of the colours

The blue colouring is said to represent the country's thousands of lakes and the sky, with white for the snow that covers the land in winter.

Susanna (April 2014) sent me this beautiful postcard of a row of Finnish flags (Postcrossing) and she has used an interesting stamp featuring another great interest of mine - trains!

Kati (18 August 2015) sent this postcard of Marjaniemi lighthouse and the Finnish flag.  This is actually the second copy that I have received.  See

for information about the lighthouse.
