SW BB-078 Theodor Heuss Bridge (Mainz - Wiesbaden)

The Theodor Heuss Bridge is an arch bridge over the Rhine River connecting Wiesbaden, capital of Hesse and Mainz, capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. The spans of the bridge are 87.13 m - 98.96 m - 102.94 m - 98.96 m - 87.13m.  This bridge connects the Bundesstraßes 40 and 455. It is named for Theodor Heuss (first President of the Federal Republic of Germany after World War II, from 1949 to 1959).

The Romans had built a bridge in this region in 27 AD.  The original arch bridge was inaugurated on 30 May 1885. The bridge was widened from 1931 to 1934 but was destroyed on 17 March 1945 by German military engineers towards the end of the second World War. By 19 March of that year, the Germans had blown all Rhine bridges from Ludwigshafen northward.

The Theodor Heuss Bridge was rebuilt in the years 1948 to 1950 and partially reconstructed between 1992 and 1995.
