The Battle of Fallen Timbers Monument or Anthony Wayne Memorial was dedicated in 1929 at the site of the Battle of Fallen Timbers which took place on August 20, 1794. The monument is located in a park, 3.6 km (2 mi) west of Maumee, Ohio.
The monument includes a 4.6 m (15 ft) tall base topped by a bronze
statue of General Wayne flanked by figures of a Native American and a
frontiersman.
The Battle of Fallen Timbers is one of the three most important
battles in the development of the American nation. At that battle General
"Mad Anthony" Wayne defeated a combined army of various tribes led by
Chiefs Little Turtle, Turkey Foot, Blue Jacket and others. This decisive
victory opened the Northwest Territory, a five-state region not ceded by the
native inhabitants, for westward expansion and led to Ohio’s statehood in 1803.
The battle site was named "Fallen
Timbers" because the fighting took place amid trees toppled by a
tornado. Fewer than 100 men on each side died in the brief battle.
