"The
Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" is a
colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in the middle of New York
Harbour, in Manhattan, New York City. It was a gift of friendship from the
people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol
of freedom and democracy.
The statue was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and it was dedicated
on October 28, 1886.
The
statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a
tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of
the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at
her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States. The Statue of Liberty was designated as a
National Monument in 1924.
This third postcard came from Connie D. (26 June 2014) Goodreads. It features the front page of The New Yorker of July 1954. A great postcard!
