Kékestető is 1,014m (3,327 ft) high and it is the highest point in
Hungary. It is one of the peaks in the
Mátra range. Kékestető is Hungary's
third most popular tourist attraction, after Lake Balaton and the Danube, and
has a number of hotels and skiing pistes. The Kékestető 178m-tall TV Tower
stands at the summit. This TV tower is also an observation tower with a
restaurant.
Location
Kékestető is 4 km west of Mátraháza and 12 km northeast of
Gyöngyös in Heves County.
Meaning
The name Kékes is derived from the mountain's often bluish colour.
In Hungarian, the word kék means 'blue', while kékes means 'bluish'; tető means
“top” or “peak”.
