SW BW-167 Tampere, a city between 2 lakes

Tampere is a city in southern Finland. It is the most populous inland city in any of the Nordic countries.

The city proper has a population of more than 220,000 and in the metropolitan area (Tampere sub-region) there are more than 360,000 people.  It is on an area of 4,977 km2 .

Tampere is located between two lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Since the two lakes differ in level by 18 metres (59 ft), the rapids linking them, Tammerkoski, have been an important power source throughout history, most recently for generating electricity. Tampere has an important industrial past as the former centre of Finnish industry.  In the postcard (bottom right) there is a picture of the (now converted) former industrial building of the  heavy industry company Tempella (which is no longer an industrial company).

Helsinki is just 1.5 hours by train and 2 hours by car away from Tampere. The distance to Turku is approximately the same.
