Freiburg im
Breisgau is a sunny, cheerful university town. Its medieval Altstadt (old
town) is a tableau of gabled town houses, cobblestone lanes and cafe-rimmed
plazas. Freiburg lies at the foot of the Black Forest’s wooded slopes and
vineyards and is blessed with 2,000 hours of annual sunshine. It is Germany’s
warmest city. Being in the heart of a major wine-growing region, Freiburg
serves as the primary tourist entry point to the scenic beauty of the Black
Forest.
Freiburg has a population of about 230,000 people. The
city is known for its medieval university and minster.
This postcard shows Rau's Fountain in the centre of the Kartoffelmarkt
(Potato Market) Square. This fountain
dates from the year 1909. It was donated by Ludwig Rau and it shows a water
carrier with her 4 children.
