TW-1304558 Sulphuric Fire Fishing on the North Coast

北海岸夜行磺火船

This postcard shows traditional sulphuric fire fishing practiced near Jinshan 金山on Taiwan's north coast.

This is an ancient fishing technique. Fishermen use a huge sulphuric fire to attract [qīng lín] Harengula fish (see notes below). Currently there are only 4 fishing boats in Taiwan's northern coast that keep this traditional art alive.  It is only in the night and in Summer that this type of fishing can take place.

Note:
Harengula [qīng lín 青鳞鱼] is a genus of herrings that occur mostly in the western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, with one species in the eastern Pacific Ocean. There are currently four described species.

This postcard was sent by Cara (17 July 2014) Postcrossing.
