Jackson is the state capital and largest city with more than 175,000 people.
The name of the state derives from the Mississippi River, which flows along its
western boundary and comes from the Ojibwe word misi-ziibi ("Great
River"). Mississippi became the 20th state admitted to the Union in 1817.
