BY-1419881 Christmas in Belarus

Christmas is one of the main spiritual Christian holidays in Belarus, a time of peace, faith and hope. In Belarus this event is celebrated twice: according to the Gregorian and the Julian calendars. Christmas is celebrated on December 25 by Belarusian Catholics and on January 7 by Orthodox believers.

A great number of social events is organized in the streets of towns and cities at Christmas time. The celebration of Christmas and New Year is opened with a traditional parade of Father Frosts and Snow Maidens in the centre of Minsk on December 24. Decorative lights are lit and there are ornaments in all the towns and cities of Belarus. There is always a large Christmas tree in October Square in Minsk.

The main event of this holiday are of course the religious services taking place from December 25 to December 26 for Catholic and from January 6 to January 7 for Orthodox believers in all the churches of the country.

Usually, the Christmas celebration ends with a festive dinner with family and friends.
