On November 19, 1889 Brazil adopted its current national
flag. Previous to this date, Brazil flew
the flag of the Empire of Brazil. The
new flag was similar to the previous imperial flag because the green field and
the yellow rhombus were preserved. The
green represented the House of Braganza of Dom Pedro I, the first Emperor of
Brazil, while the yellow represented the House of Habsburg of his wife.
Instead of the arms of the Empire of Brazil, the national
flag has a blue disc depicting a starry sky spanned by a curved band inscribed
with the national motto. The motto is "Ordem e Progresso"
("Order and Progress").
There are 27 white five-pointed stars within the blue
circle. Each star represents a specific
State, plus one for the Federal District.
