DE-3867699 Geopark Ries

The Ries event, i.e. the impact of a huge meteorite 14.5 million years ago, still has an effect on the Ries region to this day. The impact crater, Nördlinger Ries, is the best preserved impact crater in Europe. The shallow for the most part unforested crater basin is clearly recognisable in the landscape. The crater has a diameter of 25 km and its crater rim is up to 150 m high.

The Ries Geopark covers an area of some 1,800 km².  Most of the land is located in Bavaria.  This is a very well developed tourist region.
