DE-4055379 Holtenau Lighthouse in Kiel

This lighthouse is located in Holtenau in Kiel, the capital of the German land of Schleswig-Holstein. The lighthouse has an octagonal foundation. Its claim to fame lies in the small memorial hall commemorating the day 21st June 1895 that the Emperor Wilhelm II opened  the North Sea-Baltic Sea Canal which was then called the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal. This important canal provided shipping connection between the Baltic Sea and the North sea. This lighthouse was built to guide ships into the Kiel canal locks.
This postcard came from Joachim (27 March 2015) Postcrossing.
