DE-4095683 Semper Opera House

Semper Opera House (Semperoper) is the most famous opera house in Germany.  It is located in Dresden, capital of the Free State of Saxony.  It houses the Saxon State Orchestra, one of the world's oldest and best-known orchestras.

Semper Opera House was built in 1838-41 by Gottfried Semper. It was gutted by fire in 1869 and rebuilt in 1871-78 in High Renaissance style according to Semper´s plans by his son Manfred. The house was completely destroyed in 1945 and was reopened in 1985 after extensive reconstruction.

It is the only theatre in Germany that bears the name of its architect.

This postcard shows Semper Opera House as well as a stamp commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Gottfried Semper (1803  1879).  The postcard came from André (9 April 2015) Postcrossing.
