DE-37774371 Swedish wooden church in Rügen

Rügen is the most popular tourist island in Germany.  It is situated in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.  There are 49 church buildings on the island.

A Swedish Wooden Church (Schwedische Holzkirche) is located in Ralswiek which is in the central part of the island. This wooden chapel is a small evangelical church of the Protestant parish Schaprode.

At the end of the 19th century, Count Hugo Sholto Douglas had acquired the estate of Aschersleben Ralswiek and extensively remodeled this area. After building several houses, a school and the streets of the town, he wanted to build a church. At an exhibition in Stockholm, the Count saw a wooden chapel there. Count Douglas acquired the church, dismantled it and brought it across the Baltic Sea to Ralswiek. It was then rebuilt on its present site again and consecrated in 1907.
